If you have a utility trailer, flatbed trailer, enclosed trailer,
or other similar general purpose trailer used to haul items, you will usually insure
them by adding them to your auto insurance policy.
However, it is possible to also purchase a standalone trailer policy.
Special purpose trailers such as boat trailers,
snowmobile trailers, motorcycle trailers,
and other such recreational vehicles trailers can typically be insured on
the same policy as the recreational vehicle.
Key points about insuring Utility and Transport Trailers:
Collision Coverage:
Protects the trailer against damage or loss due to
collisions with cars, objects, even the ground. Such coverage would
need to be specifically selected for the trailer.
Other-than-Collision Coverage:
Protects the trailer against damage or loss due non-collision
hazards such as theft, fire, vandalism, and certain natural disasters. Such
coverage would need to be specifically selected for the trailer.
Liability Insurance:
When the trailer is connected to an auto, the
auto insurance policy
protecting that auto will usually provide liability insurance
for damage or injuries caused by the trailer. When disconnected
from an auto, liability insurance
for damage or injuries caused by the trailer will usually
be automatically provided by the owner's home insurance
or renter's insurance policy.
